A Syrian refugee camp, where discarded materials are turned into toys

Kareem is a 65 year old carpenter who escaped the horrors of the war in Syria and found shelter in Azraq refugee camp in Jordan. The camp is located in a deserted area and to keep himself busy, Kareem puts his experience in the construction sector and carpentry at the service of children. Using discarded materials and supplies he turns waste into toys. Here below you can see an airplane made from spare sheets of foam insulation, wires and string that he found in the camp.

So when he decided to produce one for children he thought of the planes he used to travel on and not the war ones. He says that he finds pleasure in seeing children play and this takes the stress of their situation away. Making children happy in times of war and deprivation has now become his mission.
